March has two birthstones to choose from aquamarine and bloodstone. Last year our March blog focused on aquamarine so this year we wanted to share 10 random facts about the bloodstone.

1.     Bloodstone is a dark green variety of chalcedony with red spots or streaks.

2.     Bloodstone is also known as heliotrope, which means "sun turner" in Greek, because of a belief that it could turn the sun red when placed in water.

3.     Bloodstone is found in many parts of the world, including India, Brazil, and Australia.

4.     Bloodstone is a relatively hard mineral, with a rating of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for use in jewelry.

5.     In ancient times, bloodstone was believed to have the power to protect the wearer from harm, promote physical strength and courage, and stop bleeding.

6.     Bloodstone crystals can have a unique property called "inclusions," which are small mineral fragments or patterns trapped inside the crystal.

7.     Bloodstone is often used in alternative medicine, as it is believed to have healing properties and can be used to treat blood disorders, infections, and inflammation.

8.     Bloodstone can be cut into a variety of shapes and sizes, including round, oval, and cushion.

9.     Bloodstone is the traditional birthstone for the month of March.

10.  The largest bloodstone ever found weighed over 100 pounds and was discovered in India in the 1800s.
