1.     Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz that ranges in color from light lilac to deep violet.

2.     Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February.

3.     The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek words "a" (not) and "methystos" (intoxicated), as it was believed to ward off drunkenness and promote sobriety in ancient times.

4.     Amethyst is found in many parts of the world, including Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, and Russia.

5.     Amethyst is a relatively hard mineral, with a rating of 7 on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for use in jewelry.

6.     In ancient times, amethyst was believed to have the power to protect the wearer from harm, promote clarity of thought, and enhance intuition.

7.     Amethyst crystals can have a unique property called "scepter growth," where one crystal grows on top of another, forming a crystal that looks like a scepter.

8.     Amethyst is often used in alternative medicine, as it is believed to have healing properties and can be used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and other ailments.

9.     Amethyst can be cut into a variety of shapes and sizes, including round, oval, cushion, and pear.

10.  The largest amethyst geode ever found weighed over 2.5 tons and was discovered in Uruguay in 2000.
