10 Intriguing Random Facts About the Gemstone Citrine

November has two birthstones: Topaz and Citrine. Last year our November blog focused on Topaz so this year we wanted to share 10 random facts Citrine.

 

1.     Citrine is a variety of quartz that ranges in color from pale yellow to dark amber.

2.     Citrine is the birthstone for the month of November.

3.     The name "citrine" comes from the French word "citron," meaning "lemon," because of its lemon-yellow color.

4.     Most citrine on the market is actually heat-treated amethyst, which changes the color of the crystal from purple to yellow.

5.     Citrine is found in many parts of the world, including Brazil, Madagascar, and the United States.

6.     Citrine is a relatively hard mineral, with a rating of 7 on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for use in jewelry.

7.     In ancient times, citrine was believed to have the power to ward off evil and promote good luck and prosperity.

8.     Citrine is often used in alternative medicine, as it is believed to have healing properties and can be used to treat digestive issues and depression.

9.     Citrine can be cut into a variety of shapes and sizes, including round, oval, cushion, and pear.

10.  The largest citrine ever found weighed over 20 pounds and was discovered in Brazil in the 1990s.
