Few gems have held our attention over millennia as well as the September birthstone, sapphire. Its pure blue colors and excellent durability make it an exceptional gemstone. However, not all sapphires are blue. Like rubies, sapphires are corundum gems. They occur in a full rainbow variety of colors, except for one color, red. Red sapphires are rubies.

The most famous and valuable of sapphire colors is a rich intense blue. The other colors are referred to as "fancy sapphires." They come in violet, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and intermediate hues. Sapphires can even be gray, black, or brown.

The celestial blue color of this gemstone symbolized heaven and attracted divine favor and wise judgment. In ancient Greece and Rome, kings and queens were convinced that blue sapphires protected their owners from envy and harm.

For centuries, Sapphires have been associated with royalty and romance. In 1981, this was reinforced when Prince Charles gave a blue sapphire engagement ring to Lady Diana Spencer.

Princess Di, as she was known, charmed and captivated the world. Her sapphire ring helped link modern events with history and fairy tales.
